How did Belfry, Montana get its name?

Construction of the Yellowstone Park Railroad (YPRR) led to the founding of Belfry, Montana in July, 1905 with the purchase of 40 acres of irrigated farmland at the mouth of Bear Creek. In 1906, the directors of the privately owned YPRR authorized a platted community and named it for one of its original investors, Doctor Oran Merton Belfry (b. 1856 - 1931).

Dr. Belfry had toured the area in January of 1905, one of a small number of minor entrepreneurs whose interest was stimulated by the vast quantities of high-grade coal in south central Montana. Created to be sold to the Northern Pacific Railroad (NP), a short line would be needed to transport the tremendous amounts of coal extracted from the Bear Creek mines to the Northern PacificÆs terminus at Bridger, where it would be transshipped and distributed throughout Montana. Founded on dreams and a shoestring, YPRR was never acquired by NP and in 1909 it reorganized and incorporated as the Montana, Wyoming & Southern Railway Company (MW&S) and was forced to survive on its own. Despite having to shut down in 1953, MW&S still helped bring notable economic development to the area for almost 50 years.

Born into a very large pioneer family in eastern Canada, Dr. Belfry studied medicine in Scotland, and graduated from Trinity Medical College in Toronto. Known as kind, outgoing and good humored, he practiced in Ontario, Michigan and Pennsylvania where he resided when he made his hopeful investment in the West. - Mary Belfry H.
