How did Covington, Kentucky get its name?
In 1814, Thomas Carneal along with John and Richard Gano purchased 150 acres of land from Thomas Kennedy located on the
west side of the Licking River where it joins the Ohio River for $50,000.00. It was known as "The Point" at the time but the
men renamed it in honor of their friend, Brigadier General Leonard Wailes Covington. (1768-1813) who served in the U.S.
Army and was a member of the United States House of Representatives for Maryland's Second District from 1805 to 1807.
General Covington was born on October 30, 1768 in Aquasco, Maryland. He was distinguished as a fine officer for
his time at Fort Recovery and the Battle of Fallen Timbers during the Northwest Indian War where he served under Anthony
Wayne. During the War of 1812, Covington was mortally wounded at the Battle of Crysler's Farm. He died of his wounds three
days later on November 14, 1813 in French's Mills, New York. He is buried at the Military Cemetery in Sackets Harbor, New York.
