Dear Sir/Madam:
In going through my grandmother's genealogy papers, I found a letter that she had written to someone in Ireland re her belief that one of our ancestors had named New Waterford after her home town in Ireland. Following is a transcript of part of the letter:
"Since I've discovered grandma Elizabeth Walker Meek was born in County Waterford (Ireland), I believe she named a small town in Ohio after her birthplace - New Waterford Columbiana Co, OH. The history back of this: Samuel Meek (of Revolutionary War, Elizabeth's father-in-law) bought a section of land (636 acres) from the government in the Northwest Territory in 1797, which was to become the state of Ohio in 1803. At that early date 1797, this was all wilderness. New Waterford, OH is located in the 636 acre area that originally belonged to Samuel Meek(!), and where Samuel Meek Jr. and Elizabeth lived for the rest of their lives.
