The town of Oakman, Alabama is named for Walter George Oakman. Mr. Oakman was a rail road magnate. A native of Philadelphia and graduate of the University of Pennsylvania who advanced his career from subordinate level to the top. He was the son of John Oakman and Harriet Sykes Campbell Oakman of Philadelphia. It is more than likely that the story that he paid the the town of Day's Gap $10,000 to change its name to Oakman is true. To learn more about Walter George Oakman, there is a lot about him on the Net.

I am proud of the accomplishments of the brother of my great-grandfather.
