Midpines was originally called the settlement of Bear Creek and was more of a California Gold Rush mining camp than a town. In 1926, a highway was built connecting Merced California with Yosemite National Park, running through Bear Creek. One entrepreneur opened a tourist stop and campsite in the settlement and named it Mid-Pines, because it was midway between Merced and the park and it was among pine trees. Soon after, the community came to be known as Midpines.
