Stockton, California
Stockton is a city in California and the county seat of San Joaquin County. Its location is 37°58' North,
121°18' West; its land area is 52.57 square miles (33,644 acres); its water area is 0.95 square miles
(606 acres). As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 243,771. Its mayor is Gary Podesto.
Stockton is surrounded by the rich agricultural areas of the California Central Valley, and has a large
inland port. In and around Stockton are numerous waterways that comprise the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.
It is also home to a major private university, the University of the Pacific. UOP is frequently used in
Hollywood movies because of its aesthetic likeness to East Coast Ivy League universities. Its most
famous such appearance is probably Steven Spielberg and George Lucas' Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Stockton used to be the site of a California State Hospital, the oldest in the state system, founded only
a few years after statehood. Stockton State Hospital was closed in 1996 and has since been converted
into a campus for California State University, Stanislaus.
Famous Stocktonians include singer Chris Isaak and the members of the band Pavement.

Centennial Conference Celebrates Sikh American Settlement in
Stockton
STOCKTON, Calif., Sept. 20, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- On Saturday, Sikh Americans will host a conference on "The
Sikh Journey in America," the first of four events commemorating 100 years since Sikhs first settled in the
United States.
The conference occurs September 22 in the Faye Spanos Concert Hall at University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA. It
is hosted by Gurdwara Sahib Stockton, the oldest Sikh American establishment. Founded in 1912 by Pacific Coast Khalsa Diwan Society (PCKDS), the
gurdwara became a hub of social, religious, and political life for all South Asian Americans. An estimated 700,000 Sikhs now live in the U.S., of whom
approximately 250,000 reside in California.
