How did Rochester, Washington get its name?

The Rochester area was originally called Moscow. Pioneer Samuel James founded the Grand Mound/Rochester area in 1852. Members of the James family are still active citizens in the area.
The name Rochester was selected in 1890 by Gaily Fleming after her hometown in Rochester Indiana. The name was reestablished in 1904 by John L. Nye to honor his home town of Rochester, England. - Diane W.
