Gordonsville, Virginia is located in the rolling hills of Central Virginia, conveniently close to
Charlottesville, Richmond and many historic sites.
Gordonsville's population in 2000 was 1,498.
Gordonsville's climate usually consists of warm humid summers and mild winters.
The town was named for Nathaniel Gordon, who owned Gordon's Tavern, a popular stop for
travelers during the early 1800's. In 1813 Nathaniel Gordon became the first postmaster of
what had become known as "Gordonsville".
The junction of two railroads and two turnpikes caused the town to grow and develop in the
1850's. Gordonsville was vitally important to The Confederate Army during the Civil War years.
In 1862, the Exchange Hotel was used a a hospital for wounded soldiers. Many who died at the
hospital are buried at Maplewood Cemetery.
In 1870, Gordonsville became an incorporated town.
