Netherland Inn, located in Kingsport, Tennessee, is known for being rich in history. This inn sits in the heart of what was the Boat Yard District along the Holston River. Originally built by William King sometime between 1802 and 1808 as a point where he could ship salt westward. The inn is commonly used today as a visitors look into this important settlements' history. In 1818, Richard Netherland bought the inn and established an inn and tavern to allow travelers a place to stop. Netherland had managed to get a stage contract and he knew that the travelers would be looking for a nice safe place to drink and stay. Today the inn property features a children's museum in a log cabin, a school house, a historic Flat Boat replica, and a bank barn. - Arlene Smith Dr. John Nolen developed the first "model city" and Kings Port became Kingsport, Tennessee, a chartered city in 1917. This made Kingsport the first municipality in Tennessee to be founded and ran by a mayor and city managed board. - Arlene Smith
