The land where Crossville, Tennessee is located was donated by Major John Taylor. He was given 1 square mile of property by General George Washington. Major Taylor donated the 1 square mile for a town and it became the cross roads between the E-W, Old Walton Trail, and the N-S road, I do not have the name of that road. Therefore the name Crossville, where the roads crossed from Nashville to Washington and from Chattanooga to the north. Andrew Jackson traveled many times between Washington and Nashville via the Old Walton Trail on his journeys back and forth. The old roadbed is still visible with- in a stone's throw from I-40. It is said that President Lincoln came through Crossville at least one time, perhaps more and stayed at an old hotel that was once part of Crossville.

Also, Spenser's Rock located just outside Crossville was spared because of a letter from Paul F. Taylor to Lady Bird Johnson, President Johnson's wife. When I-40 was being surveyed it was discovered Spenser's Rock would be removed. Mr. Taylor made many pleadings with the State of TN to spare the rock and go around it, all in vein. When Mr. Taylor wrote Mrs. Johnson she replied personally the rock would be spared. I-40 was rerouted around Spenser's Rock where it remains today. The significance of Spenser Rock, Spenser was an Indian killer. He was caught by a number of Indians scalped alive and left to die on the rock Lady Bird Johnson help preserve. Mr. Paul Taylor still has the letter personally signed by Lady Bird Johnson. - R. Taylor
