The town was incorporated in 1857 and was given the name "Auburn" after a town in the poem "Deserted Village" by Oliver Goldsmith. Prior to that it was referred to a Faustville after a local resident named Faust, or Scotchman's Locks refering to a Canal Lock Keeper of Scottish descent who tended the Canal Locks located nearby. During its peak years, the town was served by the Schuylkill Navigation Canal, the Schuylkill and Susquehanna Railroad, the Reading Railroad, and the Pennsylvania or "Pennsy" Railroad. Auburn is the site of the first tunnel of any signifigance in the United States. Constructed through a hill, the tunnel (measuring approximately 450 feet in length) was actually part of the Schuylkill Navigation Canal System and permitted canal boats passage through the hill. Built more as an attraction than a necessity, the tunnel eventually became a risk for collapse so the top was removed from the tunnel to allow open passage of the canal boats.
