No, there was never any Gold actually found in Gold Hill, Oregon; There was a lot of gold found within the Rogue Valley, where Gold Hill is located, but Gold Hill was actually the name given to one of the big hills that surrounds the town. - Site Visitor As a local mining historian, the statement of your "site visitor" that there was never any gold found in Gold Hill, has to be about the most ignorant tidbit of information I've EVER heard. You had better believe that there was gold found in and around Gold Hill. In fact, one of the richest gold discoveries ever made in the United States was the famous Gold Hill Pocket, which contained over 50,000 ounces of gold that was extracted by hand tools in less than two weeks. In its day (1860), this was considered the richest gold find ever made in the Western U.S. and the general vicinity has some of the richest gold deposits known to history. Even today, a lot of gold is still being found in this area. In fact, there is so much gold mining history in and around Gold Hill, Oregon that the current book I am writing is entitled: "Mines & Mining in South West Oregon's Gold Hill Mining District" - K. Jackson I just finished the book " The Vindicator" written by Iris Johnston Griffiths whose Great-Great Grandfather John David Griffiths 1826-1891 who Died at Sardine Creek and his wife Mary Griffiths who ended up in Gold HIll the rest of her life. I felt a surreal connection to this family for I took care of Iris until she died in 2005 at the age of 106. I have since developed a life long friendship with her daughter who is 93. She has shared with me wonderful stories of her mother's people during the early years of the pioneers and the hardships they endured. As of a few years ago Mary Griffiths house was still standing in Gold Hill. - Bonnie Laniohan
