How did Portland, Oregon get its name?

2 people came to settle in and develop the area, one from Portland, ME, and one from Boston, MA. They did a coin flip and the winner got to name the city. So the guy from Portland won and he named it after his hometown! - Katie M

What is the most interesting HISTORICAL fact or attraction about or in Portland, Oregon and why?

In addition to the information regarding that coin toss Portland got its name when Asa Lawrence Lovejoy and Francis William Pettygrove flipped a coin in 1845. Lovejoy was a pioneer and politician from Massachusetts and wanted to name the new settlement Boston. Pettygrove was a pioneer and subsequent land owner of what is now Oregon City, and was from Maine and wanted to name it Portland. Pettygrove won the coin toss two out of three times and the rest, as they say, is history! Portland's first post office opened four years later in 1849. - Jim K
