Common Yellow Page Categories for Savage, Montana
Savage is named after Charles Whitford Savage who fought and was wounded at Fredricksburg fighting with the First Minnesota Infantry. He left Minnesota after the war and moved to Glendive, Montana where he was a Captain of the Vigilantes. He went on to be a postmaster, an officer in the first Chamber of Commerce of Miles City and one of the signers of the Montana state Constitution in 1884. He died in Miles City in 1903. When we visited Savage we were told that the city was named after "a railroad man" and at another time, for a man who worked for reclamation. Neither of these accounts is correct. The account I have given is based on a personal interview with the Nephew of Charles W. Savage that was conducted in 1958 and exhaustive research. - William O. Wit, MD
