Town Nicknames: Capital City Hi, I see you are after info. about how the town got it's name. Here in Nuneaton, England we have pamphlets about Reginald Stanley 1838-1914 which tell us that he was a Cornishman by birth who set out in 1857 to seek his fortune in the Wild West of America. After many adventures he struck gold at Last Chance Gulch in the Rocky Mountains and became rich. He helped found the state capital, Helena which he named after his wife,and he was the town's first Recorder. In 1866 he returned to England and joined his father and brother in Nuneaton where he invested his money in the family Brickworks.He helped to build the local hospital and several nonconformist churches and many loacl buildings still remain featuring the famous Stanley Terracotta in their brickwork, tiling and decoration. - Roderick Grubb
