Captain William P. LaMothe, was the original settler of West Alton. He called the town "LaMothe", Missouri. He was born in the Chateauquay, Quebec area and at the age of 20, moved to Alton, Illinois. He made Alton home, for a good part of his life. He was an owner/pilot of several riverboats/paddlewheelers and was on the river from 1840 to approx. 1870. He ran a daily packet from Alton to St. Louis for several years, as well as many other excursions on the Missouri/Mississippi Rivers. He left the river in the early 1870's and purchased 1,000 acres of Missouri Point land, across the river from Alton. He moved his home and family to that area and had a large farm operation. He had a town platted out and built a hotel there, near the railroad tracks. Wm. P. passed away 12/3/1898 and after that, I think his family slowly moved away, towards the St. Louis area. They had been handed down to him from his Grandfather, Wm. P.. Why the name "LaMothe" was changed to West ALton, I do not know. You can check the St. Charles County Court House records, to see that this story is true. Name: Donna
