How did Avilla, Missouri get its name?
It is verified that Avilla, Missouri was named on or before 1858 because of the plat documentation, but who selected the
name and why remains a mystery. The town was founded by Andrew L. Love and David S. Holman, merchant-landowners
who basically wanted to sell goods & property at the edge of the frontier in the mid-1850s, but little information was
recorded by them, and even less about them. An authentic explanation for the name may exist in an old document or
letter, but it has yet to be discovered or made public.

It is verified that Avilla, Missouri was named on or before 1858 because of the plat documentation, but who selected the
name and why remains a mystery. Perhaps a Galician-Portuguese variant of -vila, the reason for its selection appears to
have died with the founders. Avilla, Missouri was named nearly two decades before the Indiana town of the same name.

It is unknown how Avilla, Missouri got its name. A MYTH was started that Avilla was named after Avilla, Indiana by a poorly
researched school thesis published in 1930, and was copied by later authors. Avilla Missouri is documented to have been
named nearly two decades before the Indiana town, on or before 1858.

An excellent question! That has been a mystery since the 1800s, and I researched it several times since 1976 with no luck.
Officially the answer is "unknown", but please keep asking the question. Someone could have a vintage letter or other
document in an attic chest. Sincerely, Tom Norris
