The Augusta House opened on December 31, 1831, a few weeks before the Maine legislature convened for its first session in the new capital.


In 1921 Augusta's Holman Day made 26 two-reel movies (that's one twenty-minute black-and-white movie every two weeks).


The capital city of Maine is Augusta. The change was made from Portland in 1832.


Elvis was scheduled to appear at the Augusta Civic Center just two days after he died.


Charles Bulfinch, who also served as architect for the Capitol in Washington, D.C. designed Maine's capitol in Augusta.


Melville W. Fuller, Augusta native, served as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1888- 1910.


The 1978-79 exhibit of Maine-made pottery at the Maine State Museum in Augusta was named A Tradition in Clay.


John B. Gagnon, of Augusta, who held the world weightlifting title, was the strongest man in the world in the 1930's.


The names of the two timber wolves who visited the Maine State House in Augusta are Indy and Koani.


Town Nicknames: Capital City


The area was first explored by members of the ill-fated Popham Colony in September of 1607. It was first inhabited by English settlers from the Plymouth Colony in 1625 as a trading post. Located on the Kennebec River at highest tidal eddy. Around that time it was given the name "Cushnoc" (or "Coussinoc" or "Koussinoc").

The oldest wooden fort in America is located on the Kennebec River in Augusta. The fort was built in 1754 and is called 'Fort Western'.

The area was incorporated as part of the town called Hallowell in 1771. In February of 1797, the upstream area of Hallowell know as "the Fort" was incorporated as a separate town called Harrington, but the name was changed to "Augusta" in August of that year.

Augusta was officially designated the state capital in 1827, however, the Maine State Legislature continued
