The town of Schriever, Louisiana, came to be over a century ago, when the Morgan Railroad was built out of New Orleans headed to the West. Thibodauxville on Bayou Lafourche and Houma on Bayou Terrebonne were both by-passed, and the rail line struck directly westward across the Chacahoula swamp to Donner and on to Brashear (today known as Morgan City). This by-passing of two important towns of the bayou country gave rise to a community which today bears the name of Schriever. A branch line was built running northward by the railroad, the Southern Pacific of our time, to serve - Site Visitor Thibodauxville, and another branch ran southward to serve Houma. At the junction of the Houma The town of Schriever, Louisiana, was originally called Terrebonne Station. It is a mystery how the name changed to Schriever, but according to one legend, Schriever was named for a Colonel Schriever who fell off the train as it passed the depot. - Site Visitor
