Lilburn Owens was one of the founding fathers. On the first Monday in August 1842, by the constitution then in force, our state election was held. Mr. Lilburn Owens a resident of Springfield, cast his vote, then came to Jackson Township in Greene County and began to clear away brush and start construction of a blacksmith shop. This was the first building in Owensburg. He worked almost continuously at the blacksmith trade until 1881. In that year he purchased farm and retired from his trade. The farm was on the north side of Owensburg on Sexson Spring Road on an elevation overlooking the community which he had helped to develope from the wilderness. He lived there until a short time before his death, when he became ill and went to live with a son Willie in Avoca, where he died Dec.1, 1905 at the age of 87. He was brought back and buried in Owensburg the town which was named after him in Emanuel
