Common Yellow Page Categories for Ingalls, Indiana
Natural gas drove the growth of Ingalls, Indiana in the 1890s. Excursions for potential land buyers ran regularly from Indianapolis and there was speculation that Ingalls would grow larger than Indy. Then, the gas gave out and the town settled to a more stable and sleepy existence. John Cox was appointed postmaster in 1948. His grandfather, John Cumins, was the town's postmaster in the early days. John Cumins ran the general store in Ingalls in the early days. The store was housed in a building moved to Ingalls from Alfonte. The Methodist Church in Ingalls was organized by Permelia Wilson. Ingalls, Indiana was named for M. E. Ingalls, who was the president of the Big Four railroad, which stopped there. Ingalls granted the use of his name and built a rather nice railroad depot there. - P. McKinney I believe there were at least 2 glass factories in the town. I also believe the first postoffice was run by Earl Milner in a brick building just north of the town hall. There was also a Redman's hall just north of the postoffice. The house at 313 N. Manifold St. was built by my Grandpa Robert McCarty about 1903-1906 I graduated from Ingalls school in 1950. - L.
