In the 1940's (and before and after), Bristol, Indiana, was renowned for its fruit orchards - Bristol Orchards (Clark) and Judson Fruit Orchards, in particular. It was my understanding that people came from miles around to buy fresh, tree-ripened fruit (grown on the sandy hills of Elkhart County), much as people also would drive to Southern Michican and bring back bushels of peaches to be canned for home use.

In the 1940's, especially, a kind of community (or church) tradition was the annual picnic held at Bristol Hill at the Bristol Orchards. It was held after church on the third Sunday in May, dubbed "Blossom Sunday," and was a "big affair."

I wonder who else remembers this tradition and could give more details.
