The village of Waynesville, Illinois, was named after General Anthony Wayne, hero of the War of
1812.

The village of Waynesville, Illinois, was first settled by Prettyman Marvel and Rebecca Barr
Marvel in the 1820's; it was plotted and the first lots sold in 1831, though not incorporated
until much later. It is about one mile south of Kickapoo Creek (a tributary of the Sangamon River).

The village of Waynesville, Illinois, didn't flourish after its initial settlement because other
political figures had investments in Bloomington (about 20 miles to the north) and Clinton
(about 15 miles to the southeast and the eventual seat of Dewitt County), and, in fact, has
had essentially the same population for well over a century.
