This town was founded by Charles Sutphin (He was of Dutch descent). He and his wife came here in the 1830s and was one of the first settlers of LaSalle County. The town got its name from the couples favorite nephew Earl. Charles was a lumber man and claimed 1000 acres of land here. When he left to file his claim, it is said that the claim was "jumped". Mr. Sutphin hired an aspiring young lawyer by the name of Abraham Lincoln to fight for his rights to the property and won. Charles Sutphin was quite an entrepeneur. One of his many expoits was lobbying to establish many of the roads in the territory, which are now still in use as Highways today. - Site Visitor
