What is the most beautiful or interesting NATURAL attraction in or near Burlington, Iowa and why?
Starr's Cave Park and Preserve Starr's Cave Park and Preserve was established in the mid 70's. It is owned by the
state and managed by the Des Moines County Conservation. The preserve is a 200 acre area just outside of Burlington,
Iowa. Although it is not large in scale there is still an abundance of nature, fossils, caves and more to explore. Flint
Creek had carved out from the landscape a beautiful gorge with a small valley. Along part of Flint Creek on display
are many flint and limestone bluffs. Caves are also a part of our area's natural landscape. One of the three caves in
the preserve, called Star's Cave, has for generations been explored by young and old. It may not be a large cave, but
it has enough twists and bends and a large room at the end. The cave continues, but the opening is too small to
explore. Still Star's Cave has filled many young minds with awe and mystery. I have a postcard made from an actual
photograph dating from about 1910. It shows three men on wooden steps which leads up to the cave posing for their
conquest of their expedition. There are trails leading down from the road above that twist and turn and eventually
takes you down to the creek. One such trail will take you through the Devil’s Kitchen, another small cave which you
must pass through. Across Flint Creek from Starr’s Cave and the bluffs is a lush meadow where you can find an old
stone foundation, perhaps from an early settler. Indians are also part of the area’s history and with the flint in the
bluffs I am sure they must have been here more than once. Starr’s Care Park and Preserve is filled with nature’s
beauty and all that is necessary for a person’s imagination to soar.
