Property Description
Built in 1772 the Royalsborough Inn at the Bagley House has a colorful and interesting history. The house the oldest in town was built by Capt. O. Israel Bagley one of the first settlers of the town of Royalsborough now Durham. The house was the site of many firsts. The first worship service in town took place in it on February 23 1774 the first public town meeting and children were taught here until a schoolhouse could be built. Capt. O. Israel Bagley also opened the first store of the area here and his public house served as the center of town in the days of the Revolutionary War. The house was also the home of the Bliss family for over 176 years as a dairy farm. In 1982 the Burns family bought the house at auction. The house was painstakingly restored literally from the ground up. By preserving the history and heritage of the house it once again became a place to welcome travelers as Capt. Bagley had intended. The house today consists of the main structure and an attached ell and a living room with working fireplace that greets arriving guests. The adjoining library offers an extensive array of books magazines and games. Adjacent to the living room is our newly converted spa room. Therapeutic massage and other treatments are available by appointment. In the ell is the country kitchen with its wide pine floors handhewn beams and beehive oven.
