Heeia is comprised of several neighborhoods located in the City & County of Honolulu and the Koolaupoko
District on the Island of Oahu that are essentially the north end of Kaneohe. In Hawaiian the words heeia
mean washed away, alluding to a victory achieved by the populace against others from leeward Oahu,
aided by a tsunami that washed the combatants off the shore.
Heeia includes Haiku Valley and Heeia Kea. As of the 2000 Census, the neighborhood had a total
population of 4,944. The area is almost entirely one of homes and apartments. If the census tract corresponds
to the State Tax Map Key (TMK), then the Windward Mall and Kaneohe Bay Shopping Center comprise the
commercial district, although Heeia merges into the Kaneohe commercial district at this point. Parts of
Heeia lie along Kaneohe Bay, but public access is non-existent owing to private ownership of the property
behind the shore. Notable in the Heeia area are:
Haiku Valley, a former U.S. Coast Guard radio transmitter site with the Stairway to Heaven hiking trail.
Heeia Fishpond, the largest remaining fishpond on Oahu.
Heeia Kea is a census-designated place and small, undeveloped valley separated from Heeia by Heeia
Marsh and Kealohi Point. Heeia Kea Small Boat Harbor, the only public pier and boat ramp on Kaneohe Bay,
is found here.
The U.S. postal code for Heeia and Heeia Kea is the same as for Kaneohe: 96744.
Geography
Heeia is located at 21°25'34" North, 157°48'44" West (21.426200, -157.812248)GR1. Heeia is essentially part
of Kaneohe and the nearest town to the northwest is Ahuimanu, reached by either Kahekili Highway
(State Rte. 83) or Kamehameha Highway (State Rte. 830) along the coast.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 5.9 km sq. (2.3 mi sq.). 5.3 km sq. (2.0 mi sq.)
of it is land and 0.6 km sq. (0.2 mi sq.) of it is water. The total area is 10.92% water.
