The founder of Sherman, Connecticut was Roger Sherman. But before it was Sherman it was a part of New Fairfield. In 1724, nine men had Chief Squantz agree to sell them some land. April 24, 1729, was when the deed was signed. The two men who signed it were Chief Squantz's sons Mauweehue and Cockenon.

In 1803, Sherman and New Fairfield were separated. What we know as Sherman was the Upper 7. Jedediah Graves suggested that the town should be named after Roger Sherman. Roger Sherman was the founder of the Upper 7 /Sherman and was the only man in our national history to sign the four great documents: the Declaration of 1774, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution. Roger Sherman lived in New Dilloway, in the Upper 7. He ran a shoe store with his brother.

A toll road was made on Greenwoods Hill. A toll was paid for each person, wagon, horse, carriage, and livestock that went with them. They picked this place because it was the only place that two granite rocks were close enough to make a gate.

In 1921, someone found proof that Sherman Indians did use dugout canoes, which were made by taking off a log's bark with a flint axe and then making a small fire in the log to hollow it out. One was found in Squantz Pond, filled with rocks. - Ahmed
