We moved to Carmichael in 1942-43,there was Arrowhead Market, operated by Bob Marchal, a hardware, Scribners Drug store, and a gas station on the other side. These 4 stores were located on the four corners at Marconi Ave. & Fair Oaks Blvd. My Mother worked in the market. With Luke Hopman, Joe Tice and Bob & Gordon Marchal. The Grammar schools in the area were Carmichael, Arden & Arcade. High Schools were San Juan & Grant Union. When looking to buy property my Dad had to go to the Bus station to find out where Carmichael was located. No one else knew where it was. At that time the bus only came out as far as THE Country Club(located at Marconi & Watt.) My Dad bought property on Gunn Rd,just off of El Camino Ave.,from an elderly lady, whose name was Mrs. Hubble. At that time El Camino Ave. only went from Fair Oaks Blvd to Walnut Ave. It picked up again in North Sacto, The land between Walnut Ave.& N. Sacto, was owned by an old man,who refused to sell the property. He was known as "the goat man", he lived in a small shack in the middle of the proprty, after his death his heirs sold the property and in about 1950, El Camino was put through to meet up with the N.Sacto end. El Camino High School was then built, and opened in 1951, with one hall of class rooms, and had only Freshmen attending. Country Club Centre was built and opened about 1952. We lived in Carmichael for years, and some still live there. - D. Brown (Murrill)

My family moved here 1958-59. I attended 7th and 8th grade at Carmichael School corner of Sutter and California. There was Rexall Drugs and boardwalks at the intersection of Marconi and Fair Oaks Blvd. I had my first legal drink at the Loading Chute next to the old Lucky Market on the same corner. Saratella's pizza opened around 1968. The Indain Restaurant at the corner across the street at Palm and Fair Oaks Blvd used to be an Army Navy Surplus store until the 1970's. There was a chinese market next to the Volvo Srvice shop at the the corner of California and Fair Oaks Blvd. It burned down sometime in the 60's I believe. Hoffman Park used to be the boonies where we went to "make out" in the 60's. I'm told there was an Indian burial mound found there that was looted by the kids of those days. I bought my first motorcycle in 1968 from Carmichael Honda on Fair Oaks Blvd near Californa Ave. The original building still stands and is used for motorcycle sales. I donít know when Jayne's liquor closed. But, it was around the corner from the old Rexall Drugs on Fair Oaks Blvd near Marconi. When we moved here, Carmichael had many big horse pastures with horses everywhere. - JohnT
