New River is named after the seasonal wash of the same name, part of the Agua Fria river system
which
drains into the Salt River. It was founded in xxxx by somebody, but retained a largely rural
character until its
neighbor to the south, Phoenix, experienced a growing spree of phenomenal proportions. In 199x,
the
Del Webb Corporation proposed a residential development roughly as large as Flagstaff, Arizona's
fifth-largest
city; this instigated a short-lived self-incorporation campaign which failed due to lack of popular
support.
Phoenix later annexed the region, and Del Webb went ahead as planned; the development, now
called
Anthem, is currently half complete.
