Troy is a city located in Pike County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 13,935. The city is the county seat of Pike County.

Troy was the birthplace of boogie woogie pianist Pine Top Smith.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 13,935 people, 5,583 households, and 3,187 families residing in the city. The population density is 205.0/km sq. (531.1/mi sq.). There are 6,436 housing units at an average density of 94.7/km sq. (245.3/mi sq.). The racial makeup of the city is 58.89% White, 38.56% Black or African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.69% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. 1.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,583 households out of which 28.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.6% are married couples living together, 17.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.9% are non-families. 33.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the city the population is spread out with 22.6% under the age of 18, 24.2% from 18 to 24, 24.6% from 25 to 44, 17.5% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 27 years. For every 100 females there are 86.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $25,352, and the median income for a family is $39,601. Males have a median income of $29,190 versus $20,368 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,589. 23.5% of the population and 17.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 27.5% are under the age of 18 and 19.8% are 65 or older.
